The IUP Teacher Education Center for Science, Mathematics, and Technology is a collaborative effort of faculty from the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geoscience, Mathematics, and Physics in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the University School, Departments of Professional Studies in Education and Special Education, and Clinical Services in the College of Education. Individuals in these departments are currently responsible for the science, mathematics, and special education programs, computer science courses and/or field experiences of science and mathematics preservice teachers enrolled at IUP. The purpose of the Center is to collaborate with the Office of Educational College-School Partnerships in uniting the faculty in these disciplines into a coordinated team for providing professional development opportunities for teachers, conducting research, and developing interdisciplinary collaboration to carry out the mission as described below. It is the mission of the IUP Teacher Education Center for Science, Mathematics, and Technology to promote excellence in the cross-disciplinary teaching, learning, and research in the disciplines represented in the center member departments. The Center is organized to serve the needs of both inservice and preservice teachers in obtaining the cognitive and pedagogical base congruent with the national and state standards for science and mathematics education as well as the latest research in the disciplines of the center member departments. The Center draws upon the resources of the university and the community as well as acts as a liaison between the community and Center resources. The Center promotes, coordinates, and facilitates community outreach activities to promote science, mathematics, and elementary education in the schools and to foster the development of scientific literacy in the community. Faculty associated with the Center are committed to the development, design, and publication of scholarly work. The Center encourages cross-curricular grant proposals that involve area school districts, the business community, and IUP. |
