The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at IUP offers several graduate degrees that may be of interest to science teachers. The development of a Masters program specifically for science teachers is currently being considered. The College of Education offers a Master of Education that may also be of interest to science teachers. Biology The Biology Department offers a M.S. in Biology in their Biology Graduate Program. Students may pursue either a thesis or non-thesis option. Chemistry The Chemistry Department offers two masters degrees in their Chemistry Graduate Program. The Master of Science degree is for the chemist who intends to pursue further graduate work leading to a Ph.D. or who intends to work as a professional chemist and desires to become more competent in chemistry. The degree is research oriented and a thesis is required. The Master of Arts degree is designed to meet the needs of the chemist who is currently a full-time employee of a chemical or academic institution and who wishes strengthening in those areas relevant to the professional position. The emphasis is on course work. Mathematics The Mathematics Department offers three masters degrees in their Mathematics Graduate Program. Of interest to mathematics teachers is the Master of Education in Mathematics and the Master of Education in Elementary and Middle School Mathematics Education. The Master of Education in Mathematics is ideal for secondary mathematics teachers. Its purpose is to provide an opportunity for students to increase their knowledge of mathematics and to become aware of research and innovations in mathematics education. An integral part of the Master of Education in Elementary and Middle School Mathematics Education will be to familiarize students with recent developments in curriculum, instruction, and implementation of contemporary mathematics programs in elementary and middle schools. Upon completion of the program, the student will be prepared to serve as a resource teacher, mathematics teacher in a departmentalized situation, coordinator, or in other leadership roles in an elementary or middle school mathematics program. Physics The Physics Department offers two masters degrees in their Physics Graduate Program. The Master of Science degree is designed for students who plan to pursue further graduate work or to undertake research in an industrial position. The degree is research oriented, and a thesis is required. The Master of Arts program will generally be selected by students who wish to strengthen their physics background in preparation for more advanced graduate study or to fulfill teaching certification requirements. This program emphasizes course work, and a thesis is optional. |
