Who should be on our 5-member team?

An administrator (can be a principal, assistant principal, curriculum director,
or head of department)

A special needs or learning support instructor

Three K-12 teachers of mathematics and science (specifically an elementary
teacher, a middle school teacher, and a high school teacher)

What are our team’s responsibilities as a result of participating in
the SPIRAL program?

Attendance at the residential 2001 Summer Institute (August 7-16, 2001).

Attendance at two follow-up workshops (Sat. in Nov. 2001 and a Sat. in
Mar. 2002.)

Develop your own SPIRAL activities that demonstrate an awareness
to special needs students.

Lesson Plan Components and the SPIRAL
Lesson Activity Record Sheet. Please complete the latter on a
daily basis beginning October 1 and make as many copies as needed.Remember
that you have been linked with an EX major student. This student will provide
support for helping you design SPIRAL activities to meet the special
needs of students.

Create and maintain a portfolio of SPIRAL activities.

Professional Portfolio Components. Note that this is your individual
portfolio although you may include all activities developed by your school
district team.

Incorporate SPIRAL activities into your district’s curriculum.
SPIRAL staff will contact your team to arrange an on-site visit
to offer additional support in the development and incorporation of SPIRAL
activities into the curriculum. We are planning on making this visit during
the first three weeks of November. In addition, feel free to contact the
IUP Teacher Education Center for the loan
of equipment and materials as well as for consultation regarding content
and pedagogy.

Conduct a SPIRAL professional development workshop for your peers.
